FAQ: ThinPrint License Server

Can I automatically release the licenses of users who are no longer printing?

No, because printing information is not recorded by the license server. However, one can use PowerShell to request the information from the Tracking database for those users and can, again using PowerShell, disable them on the license server.

How can I see which users have not printed for a long time?

In the management console there is no display available to show who has printed, or when. However, this information can be obtained from the Tracking database.

Can I see which users have consumed a license?

Users who have been removed and whose 28-day time limit may still not have expired are not displayed in the management console.

On this, use the ThinPrint Diagnostic Utility instead.

Can users be removed automatically when they are removed from the Active Directory?

No, the license server is not directly connected to the Active Directory (AD). It only accesses the AD during the activation process to import users from there. However, users can be deactivated or removed using a PowerShell script- but not till at least 28 days after they were last activated.

Can I release licenses by reinstalling the software?

No, licenses will only be released when a user has been disabled or removed in the management console and at least 28 days have elapsed since his last activation.

Can I release licenses at night or weekly?

If users no longer need to print with ThinPrint, you can manually disable or remove them in the management console or with a PowerShell script – however, not till 28 days at least after they were last enabled.

If one disables or removes a user before the end of the 28-day time limit, the license will only be released after this period

Can I deny someone printing?

Yes, deactivating users (THINPRINT ENABLED in the management console) prevents that they can print with ThinPrint.

Can I release licenses by deactivating users?

Yes, deactivating a user (THINPRINT ENABLED in the management console) frees up the license – however, not till 28 days at least after it was last assigned to the user.

Can I release licenses by removing users?

Yes, removing a user from the license server (REMOVE in the management console) frees up the license – however, not till 28 days at least after it was last assigned to the user.

A user has been removed. Will he be reactivated with automatic activation when he prints again?

Yes. However, it consumes another license if he was removed by automatic activation and the 28-day time limit is not yet up.

Are the 28 days counted from the time the user is activated or from the first time printing?

A ThinPrint license is assigned to a user for at least 28 days. This period starts when the user is activated (THINPRINT ENABLED). For automatic activation (ACTIVATION MODE) this occurs at the time when the first print is done.

What are the options for releasing licenses?

You can release ThinPrint licenses by:

– Removing ThinPrint users from the ThinPrint Management Console.

– Synchronizing ThinPrint users with Active Directory users. On this, use the documentation of the ThinPrint Management Console.

  • ThinPrint licenses of users removed from the AD beforehand (USERS DELETED) will be released automatically if they were activated for at least 28 days.
  • ThinPrint licenses of users removed from the AD beforehand, which were not activated for at least 28 days, will be shown as USERS MARKED FOR REMOVAL. These can be released using the ThinPrint Diagnostic Utility.
  • ThinPrint licenses of users disabled in the AD will be shown as USERS DEACTIVATED IN AD. These can be released using a PowerShell script. On this, also use the documentation of the ThinPrint Management Console

When does a user use a second license?

If a user is removed but then re-added and activated, then he uses another license if this action is carried out within 28 days since he was last activated (THINPRINT ENABLED).

With automatic activation, at which time a license will be consumed?

For automatic activation this occurs with a user’s first printing or when they receive a printer via ThinPrint AutoConnect the first time.

How users will be activated?

  • Two modes are available for activating users, i. e. assigning licenses to user accounts:
    • automatic user activation (default)
    • manual user activation
  • With automatic user activation the licenses are assigned to users when they receive a printer via AutoConnect the first time or with their first printing. Even in this mode it’s possible to – additionally – activate users manually.
  • Assigning licenses to user (groups) can be done with scripts or using License Server’s Management Console: Access user configuration

Where can I find the cancellation code of a license key that has been destroyed?

You can find the four-digit cancellation code in the Windows event viewer, in the field
WINDOWS LOGS APPLICATION.

Can I set up multiple license servers?

Yes, for data security you may set up multiple license servers, but it’s not really necessary. All license keys for ThinPrint Engines are hosted on a license server. If the license server is not available at any time, all users already enabled for ThinPrint (THINPRINT ENABLED) can continue to print for 15 days.

Can I activate the same license key more than once?

No, the license keys are designed for installation on a single license server. As a rule, one license server manages the license keys for all the ThinPrint Engines within an environment.

How do I activate my license key?

Every productive key must be activated within 30 days of installation. To do so, please use the
Cortado Enterprise Portal.

By contrast, demo license keys are not able to be activated (after their 30 days duration).

Does my license server have to be a member of a domain?

Yes, the license server must be a member of the same Active Directory as the user and of the print server on which the ThinPrint Engine is installed (or in a Trusted Domain).

Which TCP ports does the license server require?

The license server requires the following TCP ports:

  • TCP port 4004 must be open for inbound traffic in the firewall of the license server (for access using the management console).
  • TCP port 4005 must be open inbound (so that the ThinPrint Engine can communicate with the license server).
