License Server
Make sure that a License Server is already installed. For this, see License Server.
Unattended installation
Unattended installation and licensing are also possible; refer to Unattended installation of ThinPrint Engine components.
Installation with installation wizard
Install ThinPrint Engine according to the example scenarios.
Note! Before beginning installation, we recommend closing all windows and applications and deactivating any virus scanner. Also be aware that after installation ThinPrint Engine will only become functional after a Windows restart.
Note! The prerequisite for the installer to install .NET Framework 3.5 is that the operating system has been updated to the latest version (which may already install .NET Framework 3.5).
The installation can be done on the Windows terminal server on which the license server was previously installed, or on a separate terminal server or virtual Windows desktop.
- Start the installation program, e. g. Setup_ThinPrint_13_Complete_x64.exe or Setup_ThinPrintEngine_x64.exe.
- Select Install ThinPrint Engine if you use the bundle installer Setup_ThinPrint_13_Complete_x64.exe.
- Select your language and click OK.
- Components that need to be installed beforehand for the installation of the ThinPrint Engine are displayed.
Confirm by clicking on Install.
- InstallShield Wizard will open. Click Next.
- Read the license agreement and accept it. Click Next.
- On servers operating systems, select Remote Desktop.
- On workstation operating systems, select Desktop Engine.
- Click Next.
- Enter the License Server address if it’s installed on a different machine. Confirm with Next.
- If the account you’re using to install ThinPrint Engine shouldn’t have admin permissions on the license server you’ll be asked for. Enter appropriate credentials. Confirm with OK.
- Choose an installation path, if necessary. Confirm with Next.
- Click Install.
- Click Finish.
- Click Yes to reboot the server.
Note! Please also note the section Storage destination for AutoConnect settings.
New printer object
After installation, the _#ThinPrint Output Gateway (template) printer can be found in the server’s printers folder.
Template ThinPrint Output Gateway
This printer is a template for auto-created client printers. In other words, when a user establishes a connection to the remote desktop, a printer is created (mapped) for them in the ICA or RDP session; this printer inherits all settings (e. g., compression level, the transmission protocol, and the TP Output Gateway printer driver) from the template.
Further information
ThinPrint Clients must be installed on the client machines to receive ThinPrint print data (see Client setup).
The TP Output Gateway is used as a universal printer driver for Windows devices. Alternatively you can use the generic PostScript driver TP Output Gateway PS for Non-Windows devices.
For more information about creating and configuring printers and templates, see the sections Templates and ThinPrint Output Gateway.
By default, ThinPrint Engine automatically creates client printers in every remote desktop session. To simplify the selection of a ThinPrint printer within a session, the Windows automatic printer mapping function could be disabled.
Note! Please also note the section Storage destination for AutoConnect settings.

- Self Service (component for choosing printers by the users)
- High Availabilitiy Service (ThinPrint HA)
- Virtual Channel Gateway, see ThinPrint Engine on print servers
- Session-in-Session
- Administration Tools (ThinPrint MMC component to remotely configure – from this computer – another one with ThinPrint components installed on it, can be installed both on workstations and servers)
- License Manager (License Server component for managing the license keys)
Update and uninstallation (remote desktops)
Update order
- ThinPrint License Server
- ThinPrint components on ThinPrint Servers (central print servers)
- ThinPrint components on remote desktops (terminal servers or virtual desktops) and workstations
Update from ThinPrint version 11.x to 12
- On servers and desktops with ThinPrint version 11.x or 12.x, simply run the version 13 installer on the respective machines – license server and ThinPrint Engine.
Please use even the ThinPrint Engine setup on desktops that have the ThinPrint Desktop Agent installed.
Update from ThinPrint version 10.x to 11
- On servers with ThinPrint version 10.0.2 (= 10.0 + hotfix HF2), 10.6.1 or 10.6 FR1, simply run the version 11 installer on the respective servers – license server and ThinPrint Engine.
- For updating the ThinPrint group policy objects see the section Update from GPO v10 to GPO v11.0.
Update from ThinPrint version 9.0 to 11
To update from ThinPrint version 9 to 11, proceed as follows:
- Apply for new license keys in the Cortado Enterprise Portal (free of charge for customers with an update subscription): https://enterpriseportal.cortado.com
- Install the License Server 10.0.2 (= 10.0 + hotfix HF2) on a separate machine. This allows you to continue working with the old version until the new one is fully functional. Here, install the integrated 30-days license key.
- Perform an update of the ThinPrint Engine(s) to version 10.0 and specify the license server.
- Perform a License Server update to version 11. Here install your version 11 licenses key (or older keys with their update subscription keys).
- Perform an update of the ThinPrint Engine(s) to version 11.
- Delete your old license keys and complete the letter of destruction, which you then send to ThinPrint or Cortado.
- Activate your (new) license keys.
- Activate your users/user groups for ThinPrint, if necessary.
Note! Make sure that no user sessions run during the ThinPrint Engine update.
Update from older ThinPrint versions
When you wish to retain your settings, perform the update step by step, e. g. from 8.0 to 8.6, then to 9.0, to 10.0 and then to 11. Next: see above.
Uninstallation
To uninstall a ThinPrint component open Programs and Features in Control Panel. Mark a ThinPrint component and then select Uninstall.
